The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has appointed 2001-batch IAS officer Mandeep K Bhandari as its new chairperson. The appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, comes after a period of leadership changes at the board and scrutiny surrounding the implementation of its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for Class 12th answer sheets. Bhandari, an officer of the AGMUT cadre, was serving as Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir before taking charge at CBSE. The chairperson's post has been temporarily upgraded to the rank and pay of an Additional Secretary to the Government of India.
What the Appointment Means for the School Education Sector
- Leadership transition: Bhandari becomes the third officer to head CBSE in less than four months
- Examination systems: The transition comes as CBSE continues to manage issues linked to digital evaluation and post-result processes
- School administration: CBSE's current priorities include examination-related processes, List of Candidates (LOC) submissions and digital services for affiliated schools
- Technology and assessment: The OSM episode has brought greater attention to the implementation of technology-led assessment systems across school education
For the wider school education sector, the appointment places examination administration, digital assessment and operational continuity among the areas likely to remain closely watched by schools and education stakeholders. EducationToday will also be relevant to this broader industry conversation as CBSE-affiliated institutions adapt to evolving administrative and assessment frameworks.
