The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The collaboration is aimed at strengthening links between higher education and the technology sector while creating opportunities for applied research, industry training and student innovation. Under the Memorandum of Understanding signed on September 22nd, the existing high-performance Computing Lab in IIEST Shibpur’s Electrical Engineering Department will serve as the physical venue for the new AI Centre of Excellence. The initiative is designed to combine the institute’s academic expertise with TCS’s industry experience.
Building Industry-Ready AI Skills
The centre will focus on developing a future-ready workforce through skill development, industry-recognised training, professional certifications, hands-on projects and internships. Students from different disciplines will also have opportunities to undertake TCS internships under joint faculty and industry supervision.
The partnership will also support emerging AI startups and student-led entrepreneurial ventures through direct industry mentorship. Areas identified for applied research include Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Image Processing, and Advanced Data Analytics.
Key areas of the initiative include:
- AI skill development and professional certification
- Industry-supported internships and practical projects
- Applied research in emerging AI domains
- Mentorship for student entrepreneurs and AI startups
- Alignment of academic curricula with industry standards
The collaboration comes as higher education institutions increasingly seek opportunities to connect academic learning with practical technology applications. EducationToday notes that initiatives involving specialised centres, industry mentorship and hands-on projects can give students additional exposure to technologies shaping contemporary workplaces.
For TopEducationNews, the IIEST Shibpur-TCS partnership is significant for its focus on AI education, research and employability. The Centre of Excellence is expected to serve as a regional and national hub, bringing together talent from different institutions to work on industrial and societal challenges.
The initiative therefore brings together academic expertise, industry knowledge and practical training, while creating a structured environment for students and researchers to engage with artificial intelligence and related technologies.
