The Ministry of Education has introduced a six-month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) for eligible in-service primary teachers holding a B.Ed. degree. Education Minister Pralhad Joshi launched the programme on September 16th, 2026, in New Delhi. The course will be implemented through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) under the framework of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
Building Stronger Primary-Level Teaching
The programme is designed to provide teachers with training specifically aligned with the learning needs of children in Classes I to V. It combines theoretical learning with practical classroom experience, with six theory courses, at least 10 days of online contact classes, and a minimum of 20 days of school-based experience.
Key elements include:
- Child-centred and inclusive teaching practices
- Primary-level pedagogy and assessment
- School-based practical experience
- Digital learning resources and self-learning materials
- Training to address diverse classroom needs
The programme is intended for eligible teachers appointed between June 28th, 2018, and August 11th, 2023, with a B.Ed. degree and appointments protected under the specified NCTE notification. It follows the Supreme Court's 2024 directions concerning the development of a bridge course for certain primary teachers without a D.El.Ed. qualification.
What It Means for Schools
From an institutional perspective, the initiative places greater emphasis on teacher development and specialised preparation for the primary stage. For schools, strengthening teachers' understanding of child development, classroom assessment and foundational learning can contribute to more structured academic practices.
EducationToday views this development within the wider shift towards strengthening professional capacity across school education. As primary classrooms become increasingly diverse, continuous training can help institutions align teaching practices with learners' developmental and educational needs.
TopEducationNews also brings attention to the programme's flexible learning structure, which allows eligible in-service teachers to undertake professional training while continuing their responsibilities. The course will be delivered through an open and distance learning model, with digital resources supporting the learning process.
The initiative therefore represents a focused step towards strengthening primary-stage pedagogy while connecting teacher qualification requirements with classroom-based professional development.
